National Human Resources Operations Manager (2010 – 2013)

This role provided leadership across a team of six State HR Managers and six HR Officers around Australia and New Zealand and was the conduit between the National Office HR subject-matter experts and the Store Operations and Distribution Centre network.
As an active change-agent I proactively contributed to and influenced the People strategy to ensure the tactical initiatives gained traction across the 190 stores across Australia and New Zealand and that staff competencies were aligned to the new high volume business model. By partnering with and working alongside the IT, Finance and Corporate Affairs teams we maintained a strong focus on the strategic goals of the business.
As a HR leader I was responsible for driving outcomes and ensuring prompt and effective solutions to people matters for over 28,000 people in the Kmart business.
Our focus was on developing the management and leadership capabilities of our managers, championing a customer service culture, ensuring a safe workplace, and managing the talent pipeline with detailed succession planning.
Kmart is one of Australia’s largest discount department store retailers with 190 stores across Australia and New Zealand and over $4 Billion in annual sales. It’s now also the most profitable having posted an EBIT result of $344m in FY13, up from $268m in FY12.

I joined Pumpkin Patch to steer the people strategy, HR operations and future directions for Australia’s 1400 employees during an exciting growth phase. The business had 69 stores in Australia when I joined in 2005 and I was fortunate to be a part of the exciting growth of 44 new stores in less than 4 years.
A true generalist HR role, I had the opportunity branch out and lead a global project in attraction, recruitment and selection; I lead the redevelopment of the employee handbook; and I project managed the updating, rollout and successful introduction of the company’s new Certified Agreement in Australia.

Gained distinction as the youngest appointment to the senior management team in the history of the company. With full profit and loss accountability, I directed all HR functions for a national chain of 43 Ten Pin Bowling Centres and 1300+ employees located in every capital city across Australia.
The GMHR role was responsible for training, health and safety, workers compensation, organisational development, recruitment and selection and the cultural alignment of our customer service vision with our people strategies.
Significant time was invested developing stronger connections with all team members through the introduction of annual workplace attitude surveys, quarterly upward feedback processes, and 1:1 coaching initiatives in each centre. As a result of improved communication at all levels within the business, the workplace attitude survey results consistently improved and employee turnover reduced.

I drove organisation-wide change and training process standardisation. Initiatives improved the quality of skills-based training and development courses, addressed the importance of delivering KPIs, containing costs and improving employee retention.
Expanded upon successes of the *Future Leaders* program, guiding the careers of five participants into Centre Manager roles, 11 promotions to Assistant Manager, and transitioning 11 casual employees into permanent staff roles. At the same time the organisations management capabilities were strengthened and the talent pool for future succession was greatly improved.
Transitioned all major training resources and documents to formats suiting web-based training or interactive CDs. Delivered significant cost reductions by eliminating time consuming and resource-draining procedures.
